Hours: 35 hours (this is a Senior position; flexibility and occasional additional or unsociable hours are requirements of the role)

Directly Responsible to: Chief Executive Officer

Directly Responsible for: Hub of Hope Coordinator, Ambassador of Hope Coordinator, Business Development and Relationship Manager, Partnership and Engagement Officer.

Job Purpose:

  • Support the Chief Executive Officer with the overall executive leadership, growth and strategic development of the Organisation. To develop, articulate and uphold the vision, values, ethos and expectations of the Organisation.
  • To act as a trusted partner to the CEO including by providing insight, intelligence, and ideas to support the CEO and board in discharging their responsibilities.
  • To be responsible for developing, defining, and delivering the organisational strategy in line with the vision and future direction of the CEO and the board, with a principal focus on business and strategic development, sustainability and inspiring and empowering programme delivery.
  • To be responsible for identifying, managing, and developing income generation opportunities with existing funder relationships as well as sourcing and developing new income-generating relationships with Foundations, Trusts, Corporates, and Individuals.

Summary:

Chasing the Stigma is a national mental health charity with big ambitions; to enable everyone in the country to be able to access clear pathways to mental health support; to reduce suicide and maintain a long-term trajectory of reduction; and to eradicate stigma and support communities. With lived experience at our very core, we aim to humanise and normalise mental health, the conversations surrounding it and improve ease of access to help and support for all.

Over the past five years the charity has gone from strength to strength, and has developed considerably in terms of the breadth, scale and impact of its diverse activities. Now at a pivotal time of growth and opportunity for the organisation, we are looking for an experienced, values-led and compassionate Director of Business and Operational Development. The Post Holder will have a demonstrable track record of developing cross-sector collaborations leading to income generation and other stakeholder enhancing activities. They will also have substantial experience which prepares them for developing, defining and delivering the next phase of our organisational strategy in line with the ethos and values of the Organisation.

This exciting new role will require the Post Holder to be responsible for sustainable business development across a diverse range of income streams and partnership working, as well as ensuring effective programme and operational delivery so that the Organisation continues to grow and realise its national and international ambitions.

Working in line with the direction and vision of the CEO and the board, this role will be critical in generating income and sustainability for the Organisation, while providing day-to-day leadership, support and management to their designated direct reports.

 

Person Specification

You will have exceptional business development experience which enables you to assist the CEO in providing ambitious strategic direction across the Organisation. Having previously occupied a strategic business development role, you will have substantial and demonstrable experience of developing and nurturing successful two-way relationships with commercial partners, funders, government departments and other bodies.

The Director of Business and Operational Development will also have an established track-record of formulating original, competitive and successful income generating applications and be familiar with all aspects of tender documentation and post award management. You will have a flexible, resilient and adaptable attitude towards work, and have an ability to be creative, innovative and be able to continually motivate and inspire others.

We would particularly like to hear from applicants with demonstrable experience of using commercial acumen and knowledge of the third sector to develop diverse sustainable income streams. The successful candidate must embody the values of Chasing the Stigma and be able to articulate how they will ensure the vision and mission of the Organisation will be central to all aspects of their work.

 

Essential Criteria:

  • Significant experience of working in a senior business development position in the charitable sector
  • Demonstrable track-record of working with relevant diverse cross-sector partners, including, for example, those in health and social care, government departments, non-departmental public bodies, and business and corporate sectors
  • A detailed understanding of, and demonstrable commitment to, the core beliefs, values and objectives of Chasing the Stigma
  • Demonstrable track-record of using commercial acumen and strategic business relationships to develop diverse income streams which enable organisations to achieve their priorities and sustain important partnerships
  • Excellent business insight with substantial experience of understanding financial accounts, the analysis of financial information, and future forecasting to support business growth and sustainability
  • Significant experience of leading, motivating, mentoring, and coaching other members of staff to succeed in their roles and maximise performance
  • Significant experience of developing and implementing new business initiatives and systems
  • Significant experience of influencing and managing relationships with strategically important partners, funders and government departments
  • Skilled and able to build collaborative relationships with formal and informal partners, and foster a network of critical and effective partnerships
  • Substantial experience of the bid and partnership management process and clear ability to formulate original and compelling bids for external income applications and related tender documentation
  • A confident communicator comfortable managing executive and board level relationships and external stakeholders
  • Significant experience of developing an inclusive high-performing culture which underpins sustainable improvements in organisational growth, performance and effectiveness
